Try 14kms if its sandstone"tight sands" well and a not that significantly less amount if its a difernt strata type from any ground water source or surface soil they have found hydraulic fracturing fractures and the water and chemicals their in travels a lot further then was initialy claimed by oil companys the EPA has just finished the first full study that wasnt stoped part way thru by interest groups and they will have 1000s more to investigate. i dont know of any deposits that lay within a safe zone to exploit with current methods, soon the world will realise just how dangerous and badly planed almost all the fracking operations are, most operate there wells within a few Km's of ground water or surface, basicly guarenteed to cause contamination unless a miracle occures

How about just passing a responsible setback law like a half-mile from individual homes and and a mile from subdivisions, urban neighborhoods, schools, and other large concentrations of people, as doing so would protect the property values of surface owners and greatly reduce most of the major health and noise impacts of fracking?

Several recent studies (DU, 2013, National Board of Realtor's 2014, Fannie May, 2014) have found that property values of surface owners are negatively impacted by as much as 25% within up to 6/10ths of a mile from a fracking operation, and have also found a growing issue with would be buyers having much more trouble getting Federally-insured mortgages too.

Given directional drilling technology today passing a responsible setback law that protects surface owner's property values would not impact drilling company profits nor fuel prices by more than the extra cost of the longer drilling driveshaft and extra well pipe required, and doing so would also end the appearance of a fracking industry war against surface property owners and their home values as well as mitigate health and other impact concerns.
