In Vancouver, 12.5 percent of condos — 10,800 units — are not occupied, according to a recent report.

The information is the result of a Vancouver-commissioned software company called Ecotagious, which analyzed BC Hydro electricity consumption in 225,000 homes over the last decade.

Vacancy for single-family homes is around one percent; condos and rental apartments 7.2 percent, and these figures are roughly the same as other Canadian cities.

The lowest metropolitan apartment vacancy rate in Canada is Quebec with 5 percent and the highest is Windsor with 16.5 percent, although London and Victoria also have high vacancy rates.
