Steak ‘n Shake to Accept Bitcoin at Over 300 Locations
Steak ‘n Shake, a prominent American fast-food chain, is set to accept Bitcoin as a payment method in all its U.S. outlets starting May 16. This move marks a significant step forward in the integration of cryptocurrency into everyday transactions, particularly in the fast-food sector.
Opportunity for Bitcoin in Everyday Transactions
The initiative will encompass over 300 locations, catering to a customer base of more than 100 million annually. The widespread adoption of Bitcoin at Steak ‘n Shake positions the chain as a frontrunner in the ongoing effort to normalize cryptocurrency transactions within the retail landscape. This decision comes at a time when traditional retailers face increasing pressure to modernize their payment systems.
Historically regarded as a store of value rather than an actual currency, the acceptance of Bitcoin offers a tangible opportunity to showcase its utility. The fast-food environment, characterized by low margins and high throughput, presents a real test of Bitcoin’s scalability and efficiency.
High Volume, Low Margins
Fast-food chains rely heavily on speed, volume, and efficiency to maintain profitability. Unlike high-end retail, where larger margins allow for experimentation with various payment methods, chains like Steak ‘n Shake must ensure that any new payment system is both reliable and cost-effective.

This forthcoming rollout diverges from prior limited trials conducted by other food chains. In 2021, Starbucks enabled Bitcoin wallet recharges through the Bakkt app, although transactions were converted to dollars before reaching the register. Similarly, Chipotle started to accept over 90 cryptocurrencies through Flexa in 2022, with automatic conversion to fiat currency at checkout.
Subway was one of the first fast-food franchises to pilot Bitcoin payments back in 2013, yet no national implementation followed despite some local attempts in crypto-friendly cities.
Global Deployments and Legal Tender
Internationally, the adoption of cryptocurrencies in the food retail sector has often been influenced by local economic pressures. In Venezuela, Burger King briefly accepted Bitcoin in 2020 through a partnership with a local platform but quickly retracted the offer. Meanwhile, El Salvador made waves by declaring Bitcoin legal tender in 2021, prompting major brands like Pizza Hut and Starbucks to accept cryptocurrency payments there.
Despite the initial excitement, overall utilization remains low, hampered by infrastructure gaps and inconsistent user experiences.
Crypto Native or Fiat?
As of now, Steak ‘n Shake has not clarified whether it will handle Bitcoin transactions natively or convert them to fiat at the register. Previous integrations have typically favored instant conversion tools to mitigate the volatility inherent in cryptocurrencies.
The approach taken could determine if this initiative signifies true on-chain adoption or merely offers another workaround. A successful implementation may encourage other national chains to reconsider their cryptocurrency payment options. Conversely, a failure could further fuel skepticism regarding Bitcoin’s practicality in everyday commerce.
